Milk Thistle Supplements
Milk thistle, a biennial plant resembling a thistle, originates from the Mediterranean and has been used in traditional medicine for over 2,000 years. The active compound, silymarin, is a blend of various flavonolignans, and milk thistle is known for its antioxidant properties.
Benefits of Milk Thistle
Milk thistle is most renowned for supporting normal liver function, thanks to its antioxidant and anti‑inflammatory effects, as well as its ability to prevent collagen buildup in the liver. Additionally, milk thistle may:
- Help reduce acne;
- Increase breast milk production;
- Assist with blood sugar regulation;
- Support cardiovascular health;
- Promote normal immune function.
Milk thistle is generally safe for long‑term use, though it can occasionally cause digestive issues like diarrhea, nausea, or bloating. It’s not recommended for use during pregnancy.
How to Take Milk Thistle
The effects of milk thistle depend on the silymarin content in the chosen supplement. The most effective form is an extract, usually standardised to contain 80% silymarin, and available in tablet or capsule form. Alternatively, milk thistle can be consumed as tea or oil. The recommended daily dose is 200‑400 mg of silymarin, equivalent to 250‑500 mg of standardised extract.
Milk thistle can also be grown locally. Once harvested, the seeds are ground or crushed for making tinctures, teas, or oils.
