Dietary supplements with hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body whose key property is its ability to bind large amounts of water to itself, thus ensuring the elasticity and strength of the skin and connective tissues. As with collagen, the body's natural production of hyaluronic acid declines between the ages of 20 and 30, which can cause increased joint pain or poorer skin quality.

Maintaining natural hyaluronate levels can be supported by regular consumption of meat broths, meat, offal, leafy greens or soy. Dietary supplements with hyaluronic acid are an alternative. Hyaluronic acid production can also be supported by vitamin C intake.

Effects of hyaluronic acid

Adequate reserves of hyaluronic acid in the body are a prerequisite for the normal function of the musculoskeletal system as well as the health of the skin. Supplementation with hyaluronic acid can:

  • promote skin hydration,
  • reduce the appearance and depth of wrinkles,
  • accelerate the healing of scars,
  • reduce joint pain.

Other possible effects of hyaluronic acid often include promoting normal bladder function, reducing the likelihood of reflux, or partially reducing dry eyes (here the application of hyaluronic acid in the form of drops seems to be a better method).

Hyaluronic acid dosage

There is no recommended daily dose for hyaluronic acid supplements that is valid for all. In studies, doses in the range of 120‑240 mg per day for at least 1 month are most commonly encountered. It is generally advisable to follow the recommended dosage listed on the product.

Hyaluronic acid is often combined with collagen or vitamin C, with which it acts synergistically.
