Maca Root Supplements

Maca Peruviana is a biennial herb native to the Andes, where it thrives at high altitudes and has served the local population as both food and medicine for more than 3 millennia. Nowadays, maca is considered a superfood, as it is rich in vitamins, minerals, essential amino acids and other substances beneficial to the body. The well‑known maca powder is extracted from the root of this plant. This may vary in colour depending on the cultivar, but the nutrient content is not affected.

Effects of maca

Maca is known as a dietary supplement that has positive effects on mental and sexual health (hence maca is also known as the Peruvian Viagra). In addition, however, it can also be used by athletes to enhance performance. The main effects of maca include:

  • increasing resistance to stress and anxiety,
  • improving concentration and memory,
  • stimulating libido and promoting fertility,
  • alleviating the symptoms of menopause or PMS,
  • promoting endurance and performance,
  • promoting proper muscle growth and recovery.

Although maca may be a useful assistant in trying to conceive, its use during pregnancy or breastfeeding has not been adequately studied. It is therefore better to avoid maca during this period. Maca supports the maintenance of hormonal balance, which can also have a positive effect on skin problems such as acne.

Maca dosage

In our country, maca can be found in tablet, capsule or powder form. A suitable dose can be considered to be about 3 grams per day for several weeks. Thus, positive effects cannot be expected immediately after one teaspoon of maca. Maca can be used in the form of a hot or cold drink, as an admixture in smoothies, and it can also be used in cooking and baking.
