What is tribulus terrestris?

Tribulus terrestris is an annual herb that has been used for its medicinal benefits in ancient China, India and Mesopotamia. Today, tribulus is popular as a dietary supplement among athletes.

Effects of tribulus

Tribulus is popular as a libido stimulant for people exhibiting lower sexual interest. As well, according to the manufacturers, it promotes the production of the sex hormone testosterone in men and estrogen in women. However, in young and healthy individuals, these effects are usually not observed. Besides these effects, tribulus can:

  • improve blood sugar and cholesterol levels,
  • anti‑inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial properties,
  • increase subjectively perceived energy.

The effects of tribulus are based on the amount of saponins, the active substances found in plant extracts. Based on the amount and composition of different saponins, the effects of tribulus may vary depending on the country of origin.

Dosage of St. John's wort

The recommended daily dose of tribulus is determined on the basis of the saponins, for which the recommended dose is 5 mg per kilo of body weight. For a 60 kg person, this makes 300 mg of saponins. If it is a 60% extract, this would mean 500 mg of tribulus terrestris.

One of the best tribulas is considered to be the so‑called. Bulgarian tribulus containing at least 60 % saponins. You can also try anchors from Vemoherb, BioTech USA or Extrifit.
