What is chlorella?

Chlorella is a unicellular freshwater algae that boasts the highest known chlorophyll content. Thanks to its content of other antioxidants, plant proteins (up to 60 %), fibre, vitamins, minerals and other bioactive substances, it is one of the so‑called superfoods. Chlorella has a rigid cell wall that is indigestible for our body, in dietary supplements this wall is therefore broken.

Effects of chlorella

Chlorella is a powerful antioxidant that helps with the alleviation of cell aging. It is also known for its ability to bind heavy metals, such as mercury or cadmium, and help with their eventual excretion from the body. The effects of chlorella depend on the specific species of chlorella and how it is grown. In general, chlorella can:

  • strengthen the immune system,
  • help with cholesterol regulation,
  • regulate blood pressure and sugar levels,
  • alleviate the symptoms of PMS,
  • increase endurance and muscle strength.

Chlorella is also often associated with positive effects on eye, liver and digestive health. Its effects are largely reminiscent of spirulina which is usually more digestible than chlorella.

The use of chlorella is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women and children due to insufficient research.

Chlorella dosage

Chlorella is usually taken in quantities of 3‑10 g per day for several months. Higher doses are not exempt after consultation with a physician and should be worked up to by gradually increasing the doses.

Chlorella is usually available in capsule or tablet form to provide a standardized amount. Chlorella powder can be added to smoothies, or cooked or baked with - however, it is easy to exceed the recommended dose here.
