Chlorella Supplements
Chlorella is a single‑celled freshwater algae known for its exceptionally high chlorophyll content. Along with its rich concentration of antioxidants, plant proteins (up to 60%), fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other bioactive compounds, it’s often categorised as a superfood. Chlorella has a tough cell wall that the human body cannot digest, so in supplements, this wall is broken down to make it bioavailable.
What Is Chlorella Good For?
Chlorella is a powerful antioxidant, helping slow cellular aging. It’s also well‑known for its ability to bind heavy metals like mercury and cadmium, aiding their removal from the body. The effectiveness of chlorella depends on its specific type and how it’s grown. In general, chlorella may:
- Strengthen the immune system;
- Help regulate cholesterol levels;
- Control blood pressure and blood sugar;
- Alleviate PMS symptoms;
- Improve endurance and muscle strength.
Chlorella is often linked to positive effects on eye health, liver function, and digestive tract well‑being. Its benefits are quite similar to spirulina, though spirulina tends to be easier to digest.
Due to limited research, chlorella is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, nor for children.
Chlorella Dosage
Chlorella is typically taken in amounts ranging from 3–10 grams per day over several months. After consulting with a healthcare provider, higher doses can be considered, with a gradual increase in dosage being recommended.
Chlorella is commonly available in capsule or tablet form to provide standardised dosages. The powdered form can be added to smoothies or used in cooking and baking, but it's important to be cautious to avoid exceeding the recommended dose in these forms.
