A 1997 study showed that whey as a “fast” protein stimulates new muscle protein synthesis by 68%, but only causes a short‑term increase in blood amino acid levels. In contrast, casein as a “slow” protein increased synthesis by 31%, but thanks to its slow digestion, it was able to more effectively reduce total protein breakdown in the body by 34%. [1]
