Vilgain Iron Goddess Oolong - a premium, partially oxidized tea with a rich history and delicate floral flavor

Vilgain Iron Goddess, also known as Tie Guan Yin ("Iron Goddess of Mercy"), is a traditional Chinese oolong from the Anxi region of Fujian Province. It is a partially oxidized tea with an oxidation level of 35‑40%, which keeps the tea fresh, yet fuller and more intense in flavor. The leaves are tightly rolled into tiny 'pearls' and gradually unfurl when poured, releasing subtle notes of flowers, fruit and light nuttiness.

Legend of the Iron Goddess

The name Tie Guan Yin originates from Chinese legends. One of the most famous tells the story of Wei, a poor peasant who tended a dilapidated temple dedicated to the goddess Guanyin. One night, the goddess appeared to him in a dream and showed him a cave with a treasure - a tea bush, which Wei replanted in his garden. The tea made from these leaves was exceptional and became famous throughout China. The name 'Iron Goddess' refers to this story and to a deep respect for tradition and nature.

Traditional processing

Tie Guan Yin is carefully processed according to traditional practices. The young leaves are hand‑picked, followed by wilting in the sun and then indoors to reduce moisture. The leaves are gently shaken in bamboo baskets to disturb the edges and trigger partial oxidation. Once it reaches approximately 30‑40 %, the process is stopped by a short heating. This is followed by rolling the leaves into tiny 'pearls' and slow drying at a low temperature to preserve the aroma, delicacy and rich active ingredients.

Rich floral flavour ideal for multiple infusions

Iron Goddess Oolong features a floral, subtly sweet flavour with slightly buttery undertones. Thanks to partial oxidation, it has a richer body than traditional green teas, yet remains fresh and harmonious. Tightly rolled leaves allow for multiple infusions - each time releasing new layers of flavour.

Benefits for body and mind

Tie Guan Yin is prized not only for its taste, but also for its content of polyphenols, flavonoids and L‑theanine. These natural substances contribute to a number of positive effects, the subject of scientific research is their positive function to support digestion and natural fat metabolism in combination with the caffeine contained. Regular consumption of oolong contributes to overall vitality and a clear mind.

Recommended preparation

Use 6‑7 g of tea per 500 ml of water at a temperature of 90‑95 °C and leave to infuse for 2‑3 minutes. The tightly rolled leaves make Tie Guan Yin ideal for multi‑batch preparation - a single batch will yield 3 to 5 infusions, each revealing a different flavour dimension.
