Dietary supplements with ginkgo biloba
Ginkgo biloba is an ancient tree, also known as Ginkgo biloba, which has been part of Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Nowadays, ginkgo biloba leaves are a popular dietary supplement to support brain function. It contains dozens of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and terpenes.
Effects of ginkgo biloba
Ginkgo biloba is an antioxidant with a mild stimulant effect that is anti‑inflammatory and improves overall blood circulation in the body. Thanks to this, it can:
- support short‑term memory and concentration,
- improve blood circulation to the inner ear and retina,
- combat tinnitus or migraines,
- promote mental health.
Side effects in the form of headaches, nausea or impaired concentration are rare with ginkgo biloba.
Taking ginkgo biloba
There is no generally accepted recommended daily dose for dietary supplements with ginkgo biloba. Studies often work with doses of 120‑240 mg of extract. It is generally advisable to follow the manufacturer's recommended dosage. Ginkgo biloba should be taken long‑term, for at least 1 month. Due to the possible negative effect on sleep, it is recommended to take ginkgo biloba in the morning or early afternoon - after individual testing, supplementation can also be taken in the late hours.
Ginkgo biloba is most commonly available in capsule or tablet form, but is increasingly being taken in tea form.
